Welcome to Day 4 of my Halloween Drink Week, y'all! We're celebrating spooky season with spooktacular drinks: festive cocktails, mocktails, and family-friendly drinks that will make any Halloween party an absolute blast! Happy Halloween!

The Ultimate Halloween Jungle Juice

It's day four of our Halloween week, and I am having way too much fun!

I went to Baltimore last week, and it reminded me of all the fun we had when my husband was in the military and everyone who worked that floor at the hospital would end up going to our friend Julie's house in Baltimore for churrasco, party games, and drinks. And let me tell you, college parties have nothing on parties with enlisted members.

It was the first time I ever heard of, or seen, jungle juice...or that amount of alcohol poured into a cooler in general.

So get the party started with my halloween version of jungle juice! This spooky drink is a potent punch made with a combination of fruit juices and alcohol...like, so much alcohol.

With a little dry ice, this simply-made cocktail turns into a smokey cauldron of witch's brew or bubbling bowl of ectoplasm, or whatever you decide to name it!

Why You'll Love this Jungle Juice Punch

  • Makes a Big Batch - this boozy concoction serves a large group of people without a lot of fuss or expense. You don't need top shelf liquor...just don't tell Ina Garten I said that.
  • Is a Total Showstopper - imagine it: sitting atop a table with halloween decorations is a massive halloween punch bowl smoking and bubbling. It's an easy way to create an edible centerpiece at your next halloween party that will get people talking!

What Even is Jungle Juice?

Jungle juice is a category of big-batch cocktails made with a combination of various alcoholic beverages and fruit juices. It is a large-batch mixed drink often served at parties, college gatherings, and other social events.

You can also find it called Hunch Punch in the South, Trash Can Punch, or Sling Juice in the Midwest.

The exact ingredients can vary widely, but jungle juice is usually made with fruit juices, a variety of inexpensive and high-proof alcohol such as vodka, rum, or grain alcohol, bottles of soda, and sometimes small pieces of fruit.

Equipment

A large container or large punch bowl - Use a halloween-themed container, I love using my stoneware cauldron, which is safe to use dry ice in.

Tongs - for the dry ice. I discuss safety measures for handling dry ice below.

Skeleton Double Old Fashioned Glasses - I absolutely love these glasses, they are so much fun and I use them every Halloween!

How to Handle Dry Ice

Dry ice is the solid form of carbon dioxide. However, it's crucial to handle dry ice with care, it is extremely cold and can cause burns or other injuries if not handled properly. Here's how you can handle dry ice for a large batch of cocktails safely:

  • Buy dry ice from a reputable supplier (like your local grocery store) just before your event. It's best to transport it in a cooler with ventilation holes to prevent the buildup of carbon dioxide gas.
  • Always wear insulated gloves or use tongs when handling dry ice. Never touch it with your bare hands.
  • Use a hammer, mallet, or another hard, non-breakable object to break the dry ice into smaller pieces. Do this in a well-ventilated room or outdoors.
  • Use tongs or insulated gloves to place small pieces of dry ice directly into the cocktails just before serving. Never swallow the dry ice or allow it to come into direct contact with your skin or mucous membranes.
  • When serving cocktails with dry ice, make sure your guests are aware and know not to touch it or ingest it.
  • Do not put dry ice directly into closed or sealed containers, as the build-up of carbon dioxide gas could cause the container to burst.
  • Allow any remaining dry ice to sublimate in a well-ventilated area. Do not dispose of dry ice in a closed trash bin or sink.

What’s in this Great Halloween Jungle Juice Recipe

  • Pineapple Juice and Orange Juice - you can use other fruit juices, but these help keep the green food dye from turning any funky colors.
  • Rum - you could use coconut or white rum or spiced rum, like Captain Morgan's.
  • Vodka
  • Blue Curaçao - I like the orange flavor, but you can swap it out for a raspberry or peach schnapps.
  • Dry Ice - optional, but there's nothing like the oohs and ahhs from something as simple as dropping dry ice in a punch bowl.
  • Lemon-Lime Soda
  • A few drops of green food coloring - this is what gives us that ectoplasm green Halloween look.

How to Make Halloween Jungle Juice

In your large bowl -- or cooler, or cauldron -- pour everything in and give it a good stir. Yep, that's all! If you feel the color isn't green enough, add more food coloring.

Before serving, carefully drop in a chunk of dry ice to make it nice and bubbly.

Variations and Substitutions

  • Garnish with gummy worms and eyeballs for more
  • Make this a fruit punch by adding cranberry juice cocktail, apple cider, and grape juice
  • Add novelty spiders - plastic spiders frozen in an ice ring just adds extra creepiness.

Pro Tips

  • Serve with Fresh Fruits - blood orange slices (blood oranges are just coming into season right now!), apples, pears, and grapes are all great additions.
  • As with all alcoholic drinks, but especially ones that have a high amount of alcohol, drink responsibly.

How to Store Halloween Punch

To make and store this ahead of time, it would be best to use a container that fits in the fridge. You can mix everything together three days before your event, then serve it.

How to Serve Halloween Jungle Juice

When serving your cocktail, drop a large chunk of dry ice into the punch bowl with the tongs. Give it a second to bubble up and serve with a long ladle.
