My first Halloween cocktail of spooky season, everybody!
If you don't know, I am a huge Harry Potter fan and I have created many cocktails and mocktails based on the series. The first cocktail this year is Lord Voldemort's Resurrection Draught.
Year 4, in The Goblet of Fire, Wormtail restored Voldemort's 'true and whole physical form' using a Regeneration Potion. An old piece of dark magic that could work on anyone who was severely maimed or even without a body (I wonder if it could work on Nearly Headless Nick?).
"Bone of the father, flesh of the servant, blood of the enemy"...well in this case, it's bourbon, pomegranate juice, and blood...orange. It's in season, yall!

Voldemort's Resurrection Draught is Dark Lord Approved!
You're probably wondering what this cocktail has to do with that potion. How it comes together? Well honey I love a theme! And this recipe has all three special ingredients in the Regeneration Potion.
- Bourbon used to be filtered through bone char (the vast majority are not anymore) and are vegan or vegetarian now BUT you know, it's the thought that counts.
- Pomegranate flesh is their arils, or the seeds, which gives us the juice.
- And blood orange...because it's called blood orange so we got the blood aspect. Shallow? Okay, ya, but it was too easy not to do.
Ingredients Needed
Full ingredients, measurements, and printable instructions are in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
- Bourbon - I love Uncle Nearest, Maker's Mark, and Brough Brothers.
- Blood Orange Juice - if you can't find the fruit, many places sell the juice and even mixers using it.
- Pomegranate Juice
- Simple Syrup - those juices can be tart so keep the simple syrup on hand.
- Club Soda - you can also use a pomegranate flavored soda or ginger beer for a hit of spice.
- Rosemary Sprig
Ingredient Swaps
- No blood orange juice? Swap the juice and the club soda for a blood orange soda instead.
- No simple syrup? You can quickly make your own. Simmer equal amounts of sugar to water until the sugar is dissolved and let cool.
- No bourbon? While recipe testing, I made a version with brandy which was a huge hit. So consider that interchageable.

Chef's Tips
- Think balance, not sweetness. Both pomegranate and blood orange can lean tart. Taste the mix before adding bubbles; if it makes you pucker, a drizzle more of simple syrup will round it out.
- Don’t torch the rosemary to death. Hold the flame just until it glows, then blow it out and set it across the glass. Too much smoke overwhelms the drink’s perfume instead of enhancing it.
