Create the most powerful love potion in the world and enchant the person you find most attractive. It doesn't create actual love, but at least this Amortentia love potion will become the biggest obsession of every Harry Potter fan at your gathering. It's sweet, tart, and oh, so fun to serve!

It's time to prepare for your N.E.W.T.s, friends. Or at least prepare for your Halloween party, and is it ever a Halloween season without me whipping something in a cauldron with dry ice? Never.
I am no stranger to love potions on the blog, but this Harry Potter cocktail? It's my favorite. It's one that has the characteristic spiral steam and a mother of pearl sheen, I'm sure Professor Slughorn would approve.

Harry Potter Amortentia Love Potion
Since mocktails are so big now and I have many readers who do not drink alcohol, I want to ensure I make every cocktail have a mocktail accompanying it. This Halloween imbibe is no different, honey, I want everyone in on the fun when it comes to spooky season!
My Harry Potter Amortentia Potion Cocktail is made with pomegranate juice, apple cider, a splash of vodka, and a bit of Chambord liqueur (or grenadine!).

To really make it Amortentia, I added a little dry ice and a tiny bit of rainbow edible luster dust to really make it Amortentia as described by Hermione in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.
What is Amortentia?
Amortentia is the wizarding world's strongest love potion, though it wouldn't create real love but a dangerously powderful infatuation. We first see it introduced in Harry Potter for Valentine's Day in Order of the Phoenix.
The effects on the person who drank the potion are instantaneous: a sickly, pallor complexion and a dangerously unstable reaction toward the person they now hold an obsession for.
A fun fact about this brew is that is holds a different aroma for everyone who smells it, it usually smells like something that reminds them of the object of their affection.
Love Potion Ingredients
Full ingredients, measurements, and printable instructions are in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
- Pomegranate Juice - I really love that deep red that goes so well for Halloween, along with its sweet-tart flavor. Swap for cranberry juice if pomegranate isn't your thing.
- Apple Cider - such a classic fall flavor, I feel like it adds a warm fall flavor that mellows the tartness of the pomegranate.
- Black Raspberry Liqueur - Chambord is sweet and smooth and brings a great honeyed-berry flavor to our cocktail. I like using grenadine or a flavored simple syrup instead when making this into a mocktail.
- Vodka - I used a straightforward vodka, but a flavored vodka like vanilla would work great.
- Gold Sanding Sugar and Lemon Juice - to rim the glasses
- Edible Luster Dust - this microscopically shimmery pearl dust will give you that mother-of-pearl sheen.
- Dry Ice - this is for those swirls of 'steam' that come from the potion. Dry Ice is extremely dangerous if used incorrectly, so please use them carefully.
How to Make an Amortentia Cocktail and Mocktail

Step 1 | Add the cider, pomegranate juice, Chambord or grenadine, vodka (if using), luster dust, and ice to a cocktail shaker and shake for 30 seconds.
Step 2 | Strain the cocktail or mocktail into martini glasses rimmed with lemon juice and sanding sugar.
Step 3 | Serve with a tiny chunk of dry ice in the glass. But wait until the dry ice has dissolved before enjoying the drink.

Pro Tips on Dry Ice
Dry Ice can usually be found at big chain grocery stores like Harris Teeter, Kroger, Walmart, etc. Call before just running to the store, not every store has it.
When using dry ice never and I mean never touch it with your bare skin or with any orifice or membranes like your mouth or tongue. This stuff is so cold it doesn't even have a liquid state, it just evaporates!
Always use tongs to move it around, and use it in well ventilated spaces. Living room? ok. spooky closet or old unventilated cabin? I don't suggest it.

Dry ice needs to be so cold it will evaporate in your freezer so you'll have to get it the day of usage, preferably up to a few hours before serving.

Skeleton Martini Glasses!
These glasses are only available during spooky season (starting around August, I believe) and stop being sold every year in early November! Grab them when you can!

FAQs
Amortentia cannot manufacture or imitate love. The effects of the potion on a person in real life are, at worse, drunkenness. Drink responsibly.
