a highball glass filled with muddled strawberries, mint, and rum for a strawberry mint mojito

I grew up in the land of mojitos. Miami is full of old folks playing dominos, loud live music, and hole-in-the-wall restaurants serving up a tall glass of this refreshing cocktail.

If you've never had one, you need to make yourself a fresh strawberry mojito. It takes the classic mojito recipe and gives such a fun twist with sweet strawberries

What is a mojito?

A mojito is a traditional Cuban cocktail with origins in Havana, Cuba. While the full origins weren't preserved, the theory is that enslaved Tainos and Africans created the original mojito with 'aguadiente de cana', an early rum-like alcohol made from sugar cane, mint, and citrus as a type of medicine.

When the Bacardi rum company was created in the 1800's, the drink gained popularity with foreigners, most notably Ernest Hemingway. And when Cubans left in the mid 20th century, they brought the mojito with them to the States.

How to Make a Strawberry Mojito

In a highball glass, muddle strawberries, fresh lime juice, granulated sugar, and mint sprigs with a muddler or the back of a spoon. You don't want to destroy the fresh mint leaves, just bruise them a little to release the oils. That's why we don't want to shake this in a cocktail shaker.

Pour in the silver rum, add ice, and top with soda water. Garnish with lime slices, slices of strawberry, or a sprig of mint A simple recipe with simple ingredients, it doesn't need to be fussy.

Fresh Berries. It's strawberry season! But if you're not making it during strawberry season, frozen strawberries work well.

Fresh Limes.

Light rum. Use the best rum you can here because the taste is important.

Granulated Sugar. If you're making a pitcher of this cocktail, you'll make your own simple syrup. I like to use homemade strawberry simple syrup and add mint leaves to it while it simmers to really amplify that mojito mint flavor.

Club soda. You can use lemon-lime soda if you prefer it, it does give extra sweetness.

How to Make a Strawberry Mojito Pitcher Recipe

For a larger group, let's make a pitcherful of the good stuff. It's made a little differently than the in-glass traditional version. You'll make a strawberry puree in the blender and a minty simple syrup, since muddling is going to be difficult in a pitcher.

The rest is simple: ice, rum, club soda, stir. Then serve to your guests!

Let's Make a Strawberry Nojito

Want all the sweet flavor of this strawberry cocktail but make it alcohol-free?

Take out the rum, add in either a splash of rum extract and fill with club soda, or just use the club soda or whatever bubbly mixer you like. Boom! You have an easy virgin strawberry mojito.
