Frozen Mangonada Margarita: A Delicious Cocktail for Summer!
Add this to the margaritas on your favorites list, especially if you're a fan of Tajin!
This mango margarita recipe is sweet and spicy, full of mango flavor, and a fun cocktail for a party this summer.
As a kid, I would get chamoyadas from this restaurant across from my neighborhood during the summer that also had karaoke on Fridays and a mariachi band on the weekends and for after-mass lunch.
We'd knock on the back door next to the kitchen and get 'fresh mango smoothies' in plastic cups with a tamarind straw for $2.50.
Man, they just don't make neighborhood restaurants like they used to anymore!

What is a Mangonada?
Mangonadas (also called chamango or chamoyadas) are an alcohol-free frozen mango sorbet you'll find at your local Mexican market in the summertime. It's a popular street food: a sorbet-like mango dessert in clear disposable cups with a bright red swirl of spicy, salty, sweet Chamoy and sprinkled with savory and sour Tajín.
Ingredients Needed

- Frozen Mango Chunks - I like using the frozen mango instead of fresh diced mango because the frozen mango tends to be pretty consistent and I don't have to guess the sweetness of the mango
- Mango Nectar - this is a type of mango juice that's really common in hispanic markets and in the hispanic aisles of any big grocery store. If you can't find mango nectar, use fresh orange juice!
- Chamoy Sauce - this is a line of pickled fruit condiments that range from a spiced fruit paste to the fruit-based hot sauce we are using in this recipe. It's sour, salty, spicy, and slightly sweet.
- Agave Nectar - I prefer this instead of simple syrup because agave nectar is much sweeter than regular sugar. A little goes a long way!
- Tequila Blanco
- Fresh Lime Juice
- Tajín - this is a seasoning made with chili powder, crystalized lime juice, and salt. It's a Mexican favorite that is often sprinkled on fresh fruit like mangos!
- Tamarindo Straws (optional) - these are sour candy straws that are harder to find if you don't live in a place with a large Latino influence. You can find tamarind straws online.
How to Make this Mangonada Margarita Recipe

Step 1 | Pour the tequila, lime juice, and agave nectar into your blender. Add in the mango chunks and blend on high until smooth.

Step 2 | While that's going: dip the rim or a side of your glass in a thin layer of agave or lime juice, then pour some tajin onto a plate and dip the glass into the tajin to coat it thoroughly. This creates our sweet and sour garnish.

Step 3 | Now it's time for the chamoy! I like a drizzle of chamoy around the sides of the glass, it makes for a pretty design. But for those who love that punch, add about ½ ounce of chamoy to the bottom of your margarita glass as well.

Step 4 | Pour the sweet mango mixture into your glass! This is traditionally served with a tamarindo candy stick and a lime wedge.
What about a Frozen Mango Margarita Pitcher for a Crowd?
This recipe makes enough margarita for two drinks but you can easily multiply this recipe in my recipe card! All you need to do is all the ingredients to the blender, blend them up, and have chamoy and tajin ready for anyone to drizzle and sprinkle over their margarita. Yum!
Variations and Pro Tips for a Tasty Mango Chamoy Margarita
- Omitting the tequila makes for a tasty alcohol-free mangonada drink!
- Can't get agave nectar? Make a homemade simple syrup! It's just equal parts sugar and water simmered down until the sugar is dissolved.
- Coat the rim of the glass in coarse sugar or sea salt instead of the tajin.
- Mix in your favorite fruits. Try a pineapple mango or strawberry mango version by adding frozen pineapple and pineapple juice, or frozen strawberries to the blender.
- Want a thicker frozen margarita? Cut the amount of mango nectar to 6 ounces, though it's already pretty thick with 8 ounces of it. Or add more frozen mango.

Storage Instructions
This alcoholic mangonada margarita is the best the day you make it. It's made with frozen ingredients, but it doesn't thaw the same if you freeze it.
Equipment I Used
- A Blender - you don't need a high-powered blender for this. Just throw everything into a regular blender and blend until smooth.
- Cocktail Glasses - you don't have to use a classic margarita glass either! Use what you have on hand for this cocktail recipe. If it's for a party, disposable cups are a classic.
